Julia Elbert is graduating with a BFA in Dance in the spring, as well as a BA in Public Relations. She began dancing in the Bay Area, California, where she was trained as a competitive dancer. Through college, Julia continued to train in a wide variety of styles, but fell in love with contact improvisation, Lowfly (aerial), and modern movement technologies. Julia plans to continue training over the summer and working towards joining a professional company.
My work has revolved around softness, touch, and relationships. I am interested in figuring out what benefits touch can have on the human body, as well as why we sometimes resist it. This idea has led me to working in tandem with Emily Deskin about the different ways the human body can give and receive information through Contact Improvisation. Research is central to my methods of creating, so I try and let everything unfold as long as possible before moving on.
