Research Ideas

- How does touch physically affect the human body?
- How do the intentions of one affect the reception of touch for another?
- Can we come in and out of contact using different muscle tone-ness in ways that don't hurt our bodies?

This research is done in tandem with Emily Deskin. We were interested in non-sexual intimacy that we found through our friendship and our connection through contact improvisation. I want to understand how touch can cause both extreme comfort and discomfort, which was a main focal point of this piece. Crashing together or melting into the dance create different kinds of relationships to touch and to gravity.
Are We Awake Yet? constantly is trying to understand that relationship and this dance is a manifestation of that.

Performance Opportunities

Description

Are We Awake Yet? is research in performance made through the exploration of touch. The dancers were asked to explore their own relationship with touch and the tone used within that touch. Looking between the extremes of hard clashes and soft grazes, Are We Awake Yet? explores all the nuances.

MAKING SENSE OF THE PIECE

This piece explores the different extremes in which the human body can give and receive touch. From lightly touching the skin to forcefully running into someone, we are curious about the effects these things have on our mind and body. We worked with various movement prescriptions that required the dancers to go quicker or slower or modulate the tone in the body throughout a certain sequence. We ask that you view this as research in performance and just witness the beauty of the human body.
